Cocoa tree has a solid trunk (up to 12 meters high), luxuriant crown, thick bark (dark gray brown), short petiolate leaves (obovate-oblong to obovate-elliptic). The fruit is oval or oblong, dark yellow at maturity, brown after drying. The pericarp is thick and fleshy, the seed oval, slightly flattened.
